Enhancing workforce capacity to support individuals experiencing concerns related to alcohol and other drug use.
In Western Queensland, a concerning statistic reveals that 43% of adults aged 18 and over exceed at least one of the Australian Alcohol Guidelines. This figure surpasses the state average by 7% and is 11% higher than the Darling Downs West Moreton region.
Primary health care services in Western Queensland often serve as the first point of contact for people seeking support for themselves or loved ones experiencing alcohol and other drug use issues. Recognising both the disproportionate harm of alcohol and substance use in the region and the key role that place-based general primary health services play in supporting people to stay well, WQPHN began our partnership in 2021-22 with Queensland’s AOD peak body, Queensland Network of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies (QNADA) to provide this AOD Workforce Capacity Development Project.
The QNADA AOD Workforce Capacity Development Project aims to grow primary health capacity and workforce confidence to engage with people experiencing concerns related to AOD use. Building upon prior AOD-focused capacity-building initiatives facilitated by WQPHN (such as ASSIST and Insight AOD Starter Pack), as well as the dissemination and promotion of AOD trainings by RACGP/ACRRM in recent years, the project endeavors to achieve the following objectives:
